Thermal conductive silicone: the patron saint of cooling in the electronic world

In the design and manufacture of modern electronic devices, a key challenge is how to effectively manage and dissipate the heat generated by dense electronic components. As the performance of integrated circuits* and processors continues to improve, the heat they generate during operation also increases accordingly. If heat cannot be dissipated effectively, the performance of the device will decrease or even be damaged. In order to meet this challenge, thermally conductive materials have emerged. Among them, thermally conductive silica gel has become an indispensable cooling patron saint in the electronic world due to its excellent performance.

Thermal silicone is a silicon-based material designed to improve heat transfer efficiency. It usually comes in the form of a gasket or coating and has high thermal conductivity, good flexibility and excellent insulating properties°. Different from traditional silica gel, thermally conductive silica gel is filled with thermally conductive particles, such as metal oxides or carbides. These particles form an effective heat transfer channel to help heat quickly conduct from the heating components to the radiator or other cooling device.

1. High thermal conductivity: The thermal conductivity of thermally conductive silica gel is usually between 1.0 and 4.0 W/mK, which is much higher than the thermal conductivity of air (about 0.026W/mK can effectively transfer heat from the heat source to the radiator) .
2. Good flexibility: Thermal conductive silicone has good soft compressibility and can adapt to the tiny gaps between different surfaces, ensuring close contact between the thermal interface material and the heat source and heat sink.
3. Electrical insulation 9: Compared with traditional metal materials, thermally conductive silicone has excellent electrical insulation properties and can be used without introducing the risk of electrical short circuits, making it very suitable for electronic equipment.
4. Stability and durability: Thermal conductive silicone can withstand high temperatures and harsh environmental conditions, and has long-term stability and durability, ensuring the reliability of electronic products.

future outlook

As electronic devices develop towards higher performance and smaller sizes, the requirements for heat dissipation materials 9 are also becoming higher and higher. As a new and efficient heat dissipation material, thermally conductive silica gel has broad prospects for research and development and application. Scientists are exploring adding new nanofillers, such as “graphene” and carbon nanotubes, to improve the thermal conductivity of thermally conductive silicone. At the same time, the development of environmentally friendly thermally conductive silicone is also in progress to reduce the impact on the environment.
In short, thermally conductive silicone plays a vital role in the field of electronic heat dissipation. Its innovation and development will continue to promote the performance improvement and reliability of electronic products, providing a solid foundation for our daily life and technological progress.
